Miyazaki Teases FromSoftware Easter Eggs in Elden Ring

Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki says that some easter eggs from previous FromSoftware games will be returning.

FromSoftware has always included a healthy dose of Easter Eggs in its games and according to Hidetaka Miyazaki, Ring of Elden will be no different. Ring of Elden is supposed to be littered with many different callbacks to the FromSoftware library.

In a recent interview, Miyazaki revealed that there will be a slew of Easter eggs from his Soulsborne games. These Easter eggs aren’t always obvious, and some will only be found by those willing to look high and low. According to Miyazaki, the always misleading patches will be included as NPCs in Ring of Elden. So far, Patches has featured in Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and dark souls 3. For those who don’t know, Patches is an NPC in these games who goes out of his way to trick and attempt to kill a player character.

Another returning easter egg is the Moonlight Greatsword, which has been in every FromSoftware title (besides Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice) because king’s field where it was simply known as Moonlight Sword. In transmitted by blood, the weapon appears briefly in the second phase of the boss fight with Ludwig. Even the Stormruler, which featured in both Demon’s Souls and dark souls 3 he is said to be making an appearance.

Ring of Elden Genuinely seems to be Miyazaki’s magnum opus as it seems to have included all of his favorite tropes in the game. Ring of Elden is said to include several swamps, something most Soulsborne fans are dreading it, but according to Miyazaki it just can’t help it and has even included a new effect called Scarlet Rot to go along with poison and toxicity.

Even with the inclusion of several poison swamps, it is alleged that Ring of Elden has toned down the difficulty that most FromSoftware games are known for. According to Miyazaki, this was done in order to make Ring of Elden more accessible to players new to FromSoftware games and also to not make the game difficult just for fun.

Just like the other FromSoftware games mentioned, Ring of Elden is set to have multiple endings and a new game mode plus. This shows that while Ring of Elden may be more accessible to new players, the same basic features that make it a FromSoftware game will be there.

Miyazaki also recently said that George RR Martin might end up being surprised by what FromSoftware has done with his characters. It seems that the task of famous authors was to create heroic but imperfect characters that FromSoftware could then turn into monstrous.

Ring of Elden releases February 25 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
